Comprehensive Examination
The pre-purchase exam includes a detailed physical examination, covering:
Ophthalmic Examination: Assessing the horse’s vision and eye health.
Neurologic Evaluation: Checking for any neurological issues.
Oral Exam: A brief examination of the horse’s mouth and teeth.
Musculoskeletal Evaluation: Thorough palpation of the neck, back, and all four limbs.
The horse is observed at the walk and trot in hand on a hard surface if available, and at the walk, trot, and canter on the lunge. Horses may also be observed with a rider if desired and feasible. Hoof tester and Joint flexion tests are then performed on all four limbs to detect any signs of lameness.

Advanced Diagnostics
Depending on the buyer’s needs and budget, additional diagnostics may include:
Radiographs: To investigate potential issues not visible during the physical exam.
Blood Tests: Including a complete blood count, biochemistry screen, fibrinogen levels, EIA (Coggins) test, and drug screening.
Fecal Sample: To check for parasite eggs.
Ultrasound and Endoscopy: For detailed internal examinations.
Reproductive Evaluation: Comprehensive assessment of breeding soundness, if requested.
Detailed Reporting
After the examination, our veterinarian will prepare a complete report for the buyer. This report provides detailed information about any existing medical conditions and discusses how these may impact the horse’s future performance. The goal is not to pass or fail the horse, but to equip the buyer with the knowledge needed to make an informed decision.
